1.1. Introduction

Psychology of Development II is part of the basic training of the teacher and it is located in the second term of the first course of this degree. The aim of the subject is for the student to know, from the perspective of human development, the social, socio-cognitive, play-related, moral, emotional and personal characteristics of the stage between 0 to 6 years old, which will be taught.

2.1. Learning goals

The student, to be able to pass the subject, will have to demonstrate the following results:

 

  1. Describing child behaviour from 0 to 6 years old in the following areas: social (family and with peers), social-cognitive, play-related, emotional and personal (including gender-related development).
    1. Explaining how psychological development takes place in these areas from psychological theories from the field of evolution, attending especially to individual differences and how this development can take place without involving a problematic deviation.
    2. Identifying different paces of development in specific areas: social, socio-cognitive, moral, emotional and personal.
    3. Predicting how the psychological development will be for a concrete case (with a conventional or non-conventional pace) from the general theories and the information given.
    4. Relating the action of different agents, such as the family and the same schools, with the process of optimization of development.

5.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on teaching and learning tasks such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, tutorials, and academic guidance.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

5.2. Learning tasks

The course includes 6 ECTS organized according to:

- Lectures: the professor presents theoretical contents including audiovisual material regarding infant development.

- Practice sessions: they can involve discussion and presentation of case studies presented in different formats, and seminars.

- Autonomous work: students do tasks such as autonomous study, reading of course-related material, preparation of practice sessions, and summative assignments.

- Tutorials: professors' office hours can be used to solved doubts and to follow-up students’ work.

- Assessment: final examination.

5.3. Syllabus

Topic 1. Introduction to socio-personal development

Topic 2. Emotional development in 0 to 6 years-old children

Topic 3. Social development in 0 to 6 years-old children

Topic 4. Moral development in 0 to 6 years-old children

Topic 5. Personal development in 0 to 6 years-old children
